Ignore existing segments. You will find that the network is already segmented for various reasons, but you should at first ignore these divisions and determine the best segmentation design for security. Design natural boundaries, such as those between the Internet and your network and those between partner networks and your network. Consider segments to form an area around sensitive data (such as financial data, research data, and so on). This can prevent unrestricted movement of data in and out of the area. Consider placing on a separate network the computers used by administrators to administer the network. Consider separating servers and workstations. This technique can be effective in preventing worms and other malicious code that might infect user systems from infecting servers. You accomplish this by using border controls to restrict traffic. Separate developers (computer programmers, software developers, software architects, and other members of the software development teams) from the gen eral population, creating a separate development network. Create a separate test network that is not connected to the production network. Review current network segmentation, and align it with recommendations.

After you design network segments, you must review the border controls that are in place and then choose effective border controls for new network segment junctures. Many border controls are available for managing data flow between segments of your network. The following sections describe what you should know as you begin to choose border controls.

Active Directory records events, including errors, warnings, and information that Active Directory generates, in the Directory Service log in Event Viewer. You can use the log to monitor the activity level of Active Directory or to investigate problems. To view the Directory Service log, complete the following steps: 1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer. 2. In the console tree, select Directory Service. In the details pane, Event Viewer dis plays a list of events and summary information for each item, as shown in Figure 2-18. Information events appear with an i icon, warnings appear with a yellow triangle icon, and errors appear with a red circle and white x icon.

Border controls are controls that sit at the junction between trusted and less trusted segments of a network. They can be firewalls, remote access servers, intrusion detection systems (IDSs), packet filtering routers, VPN servers, or a combination of these things that are located on a border between the internal private network and an external network such as the Internet. They can be the same controls used to protect gateways between geographically dispersed segments of a single organiza tion s network or to link partner networks into an extranet. They can also be the same devices used to segment internal networks into areas of trust.

The Network Connectivity Tester (Netdiag) is a command-line, diagnostic tool included with the Windows Support Tools on the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD-ROM that helps isolate networking and connectivity problems by performing a series of tests to determine the state of a network client. Netdiag diagnoses network problems by checking all aspects of a host computer s network configuration and connections. These tests and the network information they provide give support personnel a more direct means of identifying and isolating network problems. In addition, because this tool does not require parameters or switches to be specified, support personnel can focus on analyzing the output, rather than using the tool.
